Zat kimia yang berasal dari cat dapat menyebabkan gangguan kesehatan yang cukup serius. Cat tembok yang sering digunakan untuk dekorasi rumah atau untuk merenovasi rumah mengandung pelarut berbasis minyak. Pelarut tersebut mengandung minyak <em>volatile organic compound<\/em>\u00a0(VOC) yang sifatnya sangat mudah menguap pada tekanan dan temperatur tertentu sehingga menyebabkan udara di sekitar menjadi beracun. Bau cat yang cukup menyengat itu dihasilkan oleh VOC. VOC membuat cat lebih mudah kering ketika diaplikasikan di dinding. Saat cat mengering, VOC menguap ke udara dan jika terhirup akan membuat pernapasan terganggu.
